Sea Gate (Porta del Mare)
Built in 1496 by the Venetian Captain Niccolo Prioli, Sea Gate is one of the two gates to the Walled City of Famagusta.
The wooden-iron gate dates back to the Turkish period and the large iron portcullis, raised and lowered by chains, dates back to the Venetian era.
A marble sculpture of the St.Mark Lion stands above the gate at the entrance. On the book under one of its paws reads in Latin “Peace to you Mark, my evangelist”.
Inside is another marble Lion and the legend has it that it will open its mouth one night and the person catching this moment and putting their hand into the lion’s mouth will get a great fortune.
